There was more stuff in this show then one could possibly imagine. Circle upon circle was spinning throughout the show.ย The actors literally did laps for the two and a half hours all the while singing and dancing around in parkas in NYC in July!ย Groundhog Day was so beautiful and magical to watch. I thought to myself that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would have really benefitted from this set designer! ย Continue reading Groundhog Day→

Now tonight I truly saw Groundhog Day but without all of the glitz. ย It is also the only time that I have been to a show that during the intermission the first thing that the audience was doing was opening Google to see what a parallelogram was and how it had anything to do with the show.ย Nothing wrong with doing a little geometry outreach. The visuals in Indecent were simply stunning. ย It really was a textbook for directors. ย From the moment we came in and saw a line of actors already on stage – – obviously Jews saddled with luggage on their high and left – we knew we were headed on a journey that wasn’t going to be easy! ย Indecent is such an important part of history in both its exploration of censorship and Yiddish theatre – particularly in America. Who doesn’t like a magic show? ย I love magic shows. ย I have never considered them legitimate theatre but I was open to the idea. ย From the moment I walked into the theatre, I knew this was going to be an ย entirely new experience in the theatre. ย In the lobby, we were presented with a huge peg board that was titled, “I Am . . .” ย There were hundreds of options. ย Some were fun: “I am a hot mess.” ย Some were accurate: “I am a pilot.” ย See were emotionally evocative: “I am an unkept promise.” ย You were asked to pick one – any one. ย I personally chose the humorous angle and picked “I am a sugar daddy.” Continue reading In & Of Itself→

As an acting teacher there are scenes and monologues that you see a hundred times (as in the “care of the wig” scene) in this play. ย After awhile you almost become numb to the scene as it becomes more of an academic exercise then a real story . ย . . so it was nice to go back and discover the rich story that is here.
I am not sure if the young students that I took with me could really connect with the gut of this story. ย Dealing with chronic, prolonged illness just changes everyone. ย More than the patient, the entire house becomes a sick place. ย And even more acutely the ones who are the caretakers are sicker than the patients. ย This, I pray, is years and years away from the experience of these teenagers.
