The Last Bimbo of the Apocalypse is inspired by a photo that ran on the cover of the November 29, 2006 issue of The New York Post. The headline blared โ€œBimbo Summitโ€ over a picture of much-maligned party girls Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, and Paris Hilton driving away from an L.A. nightclub. The cover was accompanied by an article titled โ€œ3 Bimbos of the Apocalypseโ€ and featured classy upskirt photos. It was the perfect distillation of early-2000s rabid paparazzi overreach and the vicious culture of gossip that pervaded the media then and still exists today.ย ย It is here that the play poses the imaginary dramatic question – –ย

The premise of Irishtown is built on a company of actors charged with putting on a play that is โ€œIrishโ€ enough for a theater company from Dublin to take to the New York stage.  This new play by Ciara Elizabeth Smyth takes us behind the scenes (ala Noises Off) of a company preparing as they struggle with a new script that no one likes – –  let alone understands – –  let alone finds the least bit Irish – – and finally abandons – – –

Lunar Eclipse is essentially a 90-minute one-act play in which two actors bring out the lawn chairs and spend the night watching a lunar eclipse and reflecting on their long-married relationship.ย ย As the moon goes through its various stages the characters go through their hopes, losses, and lives together.ย ย This is a world premiere of Donald Marguliesโ€™ most recent play and captures themes of both optimism and despair.ย

The above are the names of four very short plays written by Caryl Churchill that are woven together with a bit of acrobatic interludes to create a wonderful evening in the theatre.ย ย Actually, the first three:ย ย Glass.ย ย Kill.ย ย and What If If Only are very short and play out as the first act and Imp. stands alone as the second act.ย ย They all are tied together very loosely by themes of faith and our need for myth – – juxtaposed against the violence we live with.ย ย And, of course what we get with any Caryl Churchill play is a seductive, playful, dangerous use of language that you just donโ€™t find that often in the theatre.ย

Bowl EP and the National Black Theatre – – – from all I could read about it going into the production was NOT going to be a production geared to my demographic โ€“ but that wasnโ€™t going to stop me from going to seeing the production and expanding my theatrical repertoire.  I love challenging myself as an audience member.  The play sells itself as follows: Kelly K Klarkson and Quentavius da Quitter need to find a name for their rap group. Through flirty interludes, cringy overshares and practicing their โ€œolliesโ€, they grow increasingly closer. Skating and Smoking. Skating and Drinking. Skating and exorcising a demon.
