βWhat if there was a fourth girl in that photo, just out of frame, dying to get in the shot? Here is where the musical takes its hold with the character of Coco who, with just a music video and one selfie begins her journey. The bulk of the musical is built on a trio of Gen Z vloggers connected only by the internet who are searching for what happened to this βCocoβ. The audience is asked to sit through an ocean of Y2K trivia, gags, and references that will mean something to some of the audience and not so much to audience members like me . . . Certain lines and lyrics humorously refer to people, events and fads of those not-so-long-ago Y2K times. Other aspects of the show mock present-day YouTube culture and obsessive content makers who exist in basements. These satirical elements mix not so easily with an earnest theme regarding youngsters damaged by online abuse
This musical was very loud β my IWatch kept warning me it was approaching the danger zone. All in all, it was an energetic 90 minutes in the theatre. The play was really nothing in the first half and began to have some heart and meaning in the second half. I just couldnβt connect with these characters and donβt see myself ever buying this cast recording if you get my drift.
