I am going to be in the minority opinion for this but Oh Mary was a bit of a let down for me. Perhaps it was because I had worked too hard to score tickets for the show when it was playing Off Broadway or too hard saving up money to see it ON Broadway that no show could have lived up to the hype. I get that the majority of the audience was totally into it. Everyone was screaming “Oh, My Gaaaaaaad!!” and laughing hysterically, but for me, the humor was a bit TOO heavy on slapstick and relied too much on F-bombs and sex jokes. It felt more forced than funny. I really do think the problem was that I just set too far back. Unfortunately, all I was able to find for this show were seats in the back of the balcony – and although I was able to see the show – I looked AT the show and was never brought INTO the show. Standing outside of the show, as I was, too much of the show read stupid rather than funny. I am SURE the reverse would have been true had I sat closer – and, had I been fortunate enough to have seen it in its Off Broadway home, I am sure I would have found it brilliant. But – at a distance it did not work.
