The production features almost every trick in the book: puppets, projections, bubble machines, and a Groucho Marx nose for Shylock, who dons a cape and vampire teeth for most of the show. The result is nothing short of chaos. Adapter and director, Igor Golyak chose to stage the play as a low budget cable access program called โThe Antonio Show.โ Equipment is constantly failing and one character tells us that all but one crew member and a number of actors and musicians have left. Yeah, go figure . . .ย ย I guess if you just keep doing crazy shit on stage maybe something will eventually be meaningful and โartistic.โย ย But, nothing done here makes the words of Shakespeare take on life.ย ย What is so wrong with the text of Shakespeare or so lacking in the story that you have to throw endless props, gags and costumes at it to make your point?ย ย If you want to do all that, then write your own damn play and leave Shakespeareโs play alone.ย ย
