The dilemma, of course, for the museum, is whether publicly showing these photographs is disrespectful to the victims of the camp. Should the photographs should be banned from the collection – or are they a necessary addition to tell the full story? Dramatically, this becomes a very dynamic place to build the play.
Known for their research-based theatre in the Laramie Project, the Tectonic Theatre Project, truly takes you on an academic adventure into a curator’s work and challenge in a major museum. Who knew they faced such interesting and fascinating challenges in their work? I had actually thought that all that was known about WWII had been said and published – but I was wrong. Much is still out there about the role of the average German and their involvement in those horrible days – much that still needs to be learned.
And best of all, this play is truly exciting theatre. Acting, visuals, and sound effects make for an evening in the theatre that never lets you go. It is teaching and theatre at the highest level. You are going someplace new – by people who are experts – led to something you can trust – and know that you will be captivated along the way. Theatre perfection!
