I was one of the lucky and older audience members who remember seeing Tonya Pinkins in the original production. What I remember about this production was Tonyaβs turn as a diva – and damn, was she good – – – but with this production I got something much more. Clearly Sharon D. Clark was the perfect person to lead this company and clearly she had the chops to bring Studio 54 to its feet – – but what was different here was the BRILLIANT work of the work of the supporting company. I donβt remember much from the original production except Ms. Pinkins but with this production I will remember incredible performances from the Radio, Dryer, Washing Machine, The Bus, The Moon, and all the members of the Gellman family. The STORY just became so much clear when the talent was balanced across all of the roles. It was a beautiful night in the theatre – powerful – and perhaps the best show of the season to further the dialogue about artists of color and the consequences of racism.
