The script claims it is inspired by the real-life marriage of playwright Anne Marilyn Lucas. Art of Leaving follows three couples β one in their 20s, one in their 50s, and one in their 70s β figuring out their definition of what marriage should be. Ideas vary greatly between the generations, causing comic confusion as the couples navigate ideas like commitment, masculinity, open marriages, and identity.
My response: The actors didnβt listen to each other. I didnβt believe a single relationship. They didnβt talk with each other – – only at each other. They were TRYING so hard to be funny, they werenβt one bit funny. This is everything theatre shouldnβt be and canβt be if it hopes to survive. To think of all the options out there in New York that I COULD have been seeing β and I was stuck here??? Why?
