God is a DJ. Life is a dance floor! If you get this song by Pink youβll totally be groovinβ on this play.
Based on the novel An Interview with God, An Act of God is just pure, comic heaven. It is relaxed and clever and nuanced and the perfect vehicle for TV star Sean Hayes. I was worried that I would be dissappointed to see βJust Jackβ from the classic Will and Grace series – live on stage. I thought it would make me miss Will and Grace. I know that when I way his co-star Eric McCormack I was disappointed. I just wanted to see Will. Β But Sean Hayes is perfect! He is personable, relaxed, and comically adroit. I just felt like I was sitting in a living room with this funny, funny man working though this satire on God. It was βeasyβ – in the best possible definition of the word.
The play is quite, quite clever. As the character of God is put to the test to address all the questions one might have of God if you were able to meet: Why war? Why suffering? How did you really get two of every animal on the ark? Imagine playing Family Feud with God – – βand the answer is . . .”
If I had any criticism of the show at all , I would love to have had more time with the moments he spent on Jesus and his failings as a father. The show really took on some interesting βteethβ at this moment and I wanted more. I know, I know it was a comedy but damn, it had me curious. 90 minutes FLEW buy and was wanting more and more.
Thank God (Sean Hayes) that something can be simple and fun on Broadway.
