I love experimenting in theatre – and I love the idea that the ever present cell phone, might, in some way to be tamed and become a help to theatre rather then its arch nemesis!ย Date Me is such an experiment.ย It is really much more of a comedy improvisation than a play.ย When you first enter the theatre you are directed to take out your cell phone and create a mock entry on a dating site just for that performance’s audience.ย It is those pictures and those โdating preferencesโ that become the basis for the improvisations and the fun of the evening. This play just didnโt meet its audience.ย I have to say that it is the first play that I have been to in NYC in which 1/5 of the audience just left at intermission. ย The premise of the show was really fun.ย Imagine the energy of a Chris Durange and the naughtiness of a Joe Orton tackling Chekovโs Three Sisters.ย Sounds fun!ย Continue reading Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow→

I was a bit worried when I bought tickets to Repertorioย Espanolโs production of Smiley.ย After all, it was all in Spanish and beyond a few niceties, Spanish is all Greek to me.ย Two things swayed my opinion though.ย They offered live subtitles above the proscenium, much like an Italian opera AND the play was brought out in the press as one of ย the most interesting offerings for World Pride Month.ย I took a chance andย went.ย It was so damn fun and interesting.ย Continue reading Smiley→

Warning:ย Whis will be a bit bias of a review in that one of my prized former students is part of this eager young group of actors working to stage this play in a tee tiny theatre.ย It was just such a joy to see him and really, such a wonderful time just experiencing the story.
The Happy Sad is all about being a twenty-something and facing the dating world of New York City.ย Most of the show is about trying to find your label or your definition when it comes to dating.ย Are you gay, straight or bi?ย Are you interested in an open relationship?ย What really is an open relationship?ย Does race or age play into the formula? Life Sucks – totally sucked in the first 10 minutes but then moment by moment totally become one of my most memorable plays of the summer.ย ย Life Sucks is โsort of adapted from โUncle Vanya,โโ as playwright, Mr. Posner puts it. (He had already gone to the Chekhov well three years ago with his well-receivedย โStupid _____ Bird,โย based loosely on The Seagull. ย Here in Uncle Vanya land, the forlorn Vanya still shares a home with the plain Sonia but now we appear to be in the United States since there is talk of student loans and American money.ย Both Vanya and the brooding Dr. Aster still pine for Soniaโs stepmother, Ella.
